How to Get Rid of Old Electronics Safely
Safe Electronics Disposal on the North Shore
That old TV in the basement, the box of tangled cables in the closet, the ancient desktop computer you replaced years ago — electronic waste is one of the fastest-growing waste categories in the country. And unlike regular junk, you can't just toss it in the trash. Here's what you need to know.
Why Electronics Need Special Handling
Electronics contain hazardous materials including lead, mercury, cadmium, and flame retardants. When these end up in a landfill, they can leach into soil and groundwater. Massachusetts law prohibits certain electronics from being disposed of in regular trash, including TVs, computer monitors, and devices containing cathode ray tubes (CRTs).
Wipe Your Data First
Before disposing of any computer, phone, tablet, or hard drive, make sure your personal data is erased. Factory reset your devices, remove SIM cards and memory cards, and consider using data-wiping software for old hard drives. If you're not sure how to do this, a local computer repair shop can help.
Your Disposal Options
- Junk removal service: We pick up electronics along with everything else. No sorting or drop-off trips required.
- Municipal e-waste days: Many North Shore towns hold periodic e-waste collection events.
- Retailer take-back programs: Some stores accept old electronics when you buy new ones.
- Certified e-waste recyclers: Facilities that specialize in breaking down electronics for material recovery.
