Spring Cleaning Checklist: Room-by-Room Decluttering Guide
Your Complete Spring Cleaning and Decluttering Checklist
There is something about the first warm days of spring that makes you look around your house and think, "Where did all this stuff come from?" After a long New England winter spent indoors, clutter has a way of accumulating in every corner. The good news is that spring is the perfect time to reset. This room-by-room checklist will help you work through your entire home methodically so you can enjoy the season with a lighter, cleaner space.
Before You Start: Set Yourself Up for Success
Grab four boxes or bags and label them: Keep, Donate, Recycle, and Remove. Having these ready in every room keeps the process moving and prevents the "I will deal with it later" pile from forming. Set a timer for each room to keep yourself on track, and remember that progress matters more than perfection.
Kitchen
The kitchen collects more clutter than any other room because we use it every day. Work through these areas:
- Check expiration dates on all pantry items, spices, and condiments. Toss anything expired.
- Pull out duplicate gadgets and small appliances you never use. That second blender or the bread maker from 2018 can go.
- Sort through plastic containers and lids. If a container has no matching lid, recycle it.
- Clear the junk drawer. Keep essentials like scissors and tape, but remove old batteries, mystery keys, and takeout menus.
- Inspect cookware for damage. Warped pans, chipped dishes, and scratched nonstick surfaces should be replaced.
Living Room
- Remove outdated electronics like old DVD players, VCRs, and tangled cable boxes.
- Sort through bookshelves. Donate books you have read and will not read again.
- Check under couch cushions and behind furniture for lost items and accumulated dust.
- Assess throw pillows, blankets, and decor. If it is worn out or no longer fits your style, let it go.
- Clear out old magazines, catalogs, and newspapers.
Bedrooms
- Try the hanger trick: turn all hangers backward. After a few months, anything still facing backward gets donated.
- Sort through dresser drawers. Clothes with holes, stains, or that no longer fit should go.
- Check under the bed for forgotten items and dust buildup.
- Evaluate your mattress. If it is over eight years old and you are not sleeping well, it may be time for a new one.
- Go through nightstand drawers and remove clutter.
Bathroom
- Check expiration dates on medications and dispose of them safely at a pharmacy drop-off.
- Toss old cosmetics, dried-out nail polish, and expired sunscreen.
- Remove half-used products and hotel toiletries you will never use.
- Replace worn-out towels and bath mats.
- Clean out the medicine cabinet and under-sink storage.
Garage
The garage is often the biggest clutter magnet in the house. Our garage cleanout services are one of the most popular requests we get each spring, and for good reason.
- Pull everything out and sort it in the driveway where you can see it all.
- Toss broken tools, rusted equipment, and dried-out paint cans.
- Get rid of sporting equipment nobody uses anymore.
- Recycle old tires, scrap metal, and broken lawn equipment.
- Donate outgrown bikes, working power tools, and items in good condition.
Basement
Basements tend to be long-term storage zones where things go to be forgotten. A thorough basement cleanout can reclaim a huge amount of usable space.
- Open every box and evaluate the contents. If you have not opened it since your last move, you probably do not need it.
- Check for water damage, mold, or mildew on stored items.
- Remove old furniture that was "temporarily" stored down there.
- Get rid of broken holiday decorations and outdated exercise equipment.
Attic
Attics are where memories and dust collide. Our attic cleanout service handles the heavy lifting so you do not have to haul boxes down narrow stairs.
- Sort through old clothing, costumes, and textiles.
- Evaluate stored luggage, trunks, and boxes of paperwork.
- Remove broken furniture and outdated items that have been "saved" for years.
- Consider digitizing old photos and documents to preserve them without the bulk.
Yard and Outdoor Areas
- Remove broken patio furniture, cracked planters, and damaged garden tools.
- Clean up fallen branches, leaves, and debris from winter storms.
- Get rid of old grills, swing sets, and play structures the kids have outgrown.
- Clear out the shed using the same sort-and-purge approach as the garage.
Donate, Recycle, or Remove?
As you work through each room, use this simple guide:
- Donate: Items in good, usable condition that someone else could benefit from. Clothing, furniture, working electronics, and household goods.
- Recycle: Metals, cardboard, electronics, and materials accepted by your local recycling program. Our eco-friendly disposal process ensures recyclable materials stay out of the landfill.
- Remove: Broken, worn-out, or unusable items that need professional hauling. This is where a junk removal service saves you hours of trips to the dump.
When to Call in the Pros
If your spring cleaning generates more than a few bags of trash, a full property cleanout service can save you an entire weekend of hauling. Instead of making multiple trips to the transfer station with your car or truck, one visit from a junk removal crew takes care of everything in a couple of hours.
